PHR Test Looming

What is my problem?! I know my certification test is looming (I have it scheduled for June 6th), yet I can't get disciplined. That's not to say that I haven't studied at all. I have. In fact, I have hours of studying in. But I know I need more. And I just have the hardest time getting motivated. I sit down to do it, and my mind just wanders. I can't wait until this thing is over.

What's even weirder is I have full, open days (like today), and I just have the hardest time opening the book. On busy, crazy days, I'll find 1/2 hour or 45 minutes and really pack in some studying. Well, I better at least get 1/2 hour in.....

Food and Workout Journal for Monday, May 26, 2008

Okay, so it's Memorial Day. We did all of our family stuff Saturday and Sunday, and now we are back in our own house detoxing. As much as we love our families, it's dysfunction junction all of the way! I'm always happy to get back to the sanity of my own home.

DH and I were in PA Saturday and Sunday visiting our families. We returned today (Memorial Day). Although I walked around a little, there was no real structured exercise. Food intake was pretty bad, but I'll get back on it tomorrow. I still journaled everything. On a positive note, my mom thinks I might have lost more weight. Also, MIL asked DH if I "lost a little bit of weight." She always knows how to put it into perspective! I need to have a post about MIL. Hell, I could dedicate an entire blog to her. If I was a drinker, I'd be drunk all of the time I have to deal with her.

Morning Workouts

Well, I gave it a serious try. I got up between 4:50 - 5:10 a.m. to workout for a few weeks. I really wanted to make it work. It just didn't. I forced myself thinking I'd make it a habit, and that part did work. I did start getting up without too much of a problem. But the issue is, everything else suffered. First, I just didn't have much strength or coordination in the morning. There's no way in hell I could do a complicated step routine (which usually, I'm pretty good at). Also, I was just not lifting the same amounts.

Then, during the day, I dragged. I just wasn't alert. DH didn't like it either...he said I wasn't myself for weeks plus he was always startled by my alarm going off "in the dead of night." Last, my sleep suffered. Just knowing that I had to get up that early made it hard for me to sleep! As much as I loved having it done in the morning with the whole evening to do whatever I wanted, it just wasn't worth it to me. I think it may be different if I was working out at 6:30 or 7:00 a.m. But starting at 5:00 a.m.? Call me a wimp, but it isn't happening anymore.

So, this week I allowed myself to go back to my late afternoon/early evening workouts right after work. Man, I feel sooo much better. I'm back to lifting my normal weights and I'm not stumbling all over myself. My assistant said to me today, "wow, you seem like your old self today!" I asked her if I was being crabby before, and she (trying to be diplomatic) said, "well, let's just say I haven't seen your toothy smile or heard one of your hyena laughs for about a month!" I told her she wouldn't have to worry about missing my cackling anymore! I'm keeping to a normal sleep schedule from now on!

If You Could Live Anywhere, Where Would It Be?

Recently, I had that question posed to me. My first reaction would be "in the country." DH and I are both country bumpkins. Not rednecks. But we both grew up in the same rural area. DH lived on a dairy farm that consisted of about 300 acres. My parents' home had a yard and woods area that was approximately 60 acres. DH and I wanted to get married and have a home that was completely private. But because we also wanted to get good jobs, this was going to be difficult in the area where we grew up.

Once we got married, we moved in to a small apartment in a large complex in a huge suburb of Cleveland (150 miles from "home"). Although the apartment was clean, safe, and really pretty darn nice for two 23-year-olds, it wasn't long before I had a problem with it: I needed my own green space. I needed to be able to sit outside. It didn't matter that everything was convenient (we could walk to the grocery store, many restaurants, the library, etc.). I needed grass and trees. DH did too, but he said he was fine renting for a few more years. Tough. I was ready to buy.

So we were 24 years old when we bought our first home. It was a brand new 3-bedroom, 2 full bath raised ranch. We both loved it. It was in a very safe neighborhood, and there were two large parks within walking distance. We had it paid off in exactly 5 years, and we stayed 11. Then I got the urge to build a home in a nicer neighborhood. I knew we had the financial means, and I just wanted something nicer. Something a little bigger, too. The current house was about 1400 sq. feet, not including the 1/2 finished basement. There was nothing wrong with that home, but I knew it wasn't a permanent thing to me. DH, who hates change, wasn't all that into it, but he did acquiesce.

We both would have loved to move further out away from the city. We would have loved to have a few acres. However, even back in 2004, DH was concerned about gas prices and said we'd have to find something close to our jobs. We found a great neighborhood, and are very happy with where we are. We live in a very small development with around 20 houses. We know most of the neighbors (where we only knew three from our old neighborhood!). Most of them are extremely nice (and even the neighbor next door that I didn't care for really does have her good points). Typically, it's EXTREMELY quiet, and there's not traffic here like there was in our old neighborhood. You can sit out on our porch now for hours and not see a single car since we are towards the end of the cul de sac. Almost like living in the country.

Still, I would love to push our neighbors' homes over a few more feet. It's just a weird space thing to me. They are already about 15 - 20 feet away from us (I can't "eyeball" measure), but to somebody who grew up not being able to see neighbor's homes, they just seem too close.

But sitting on the deck most of the day, I marveled at how quiet and private it seemed. Heck, you could have sex on our deck and nobody would notice. Not that we would. The location is also awesome. We can walk through the woods on the new bike trail and end up at some decent restaurants (and Dairy Queen!). We have a nice, very green back yard.

Sometimes, I still fantasize about lifting our home and placing it in the country. But on days like today when I realize how quiet (and yet convenient) our location is, I have to ask myself "why?" Does DH really need more grass to cut? The only thing we are missing it 100% privacy....and I don't know very many people who have that, even if they are in the country.
As far as geographic areas, I'm fine with NE Ohio. Cleveland gets a bad rap, and I always have to laugh at this. Yes, there are some bad areas. Every city has them. But for the most part, Cleveland definitely rocks. For people who love nature, you couldn't get a better city. There are tons of bike trails and nature trails around the city. We live five minutes from a National Forest that is just gorgeous. I have no desire to leave this climate. Yes, the winters an be long, but the summers are all the more sweeter for it. And fall is just awesome. I have a sister that lives in San Diego, and I know some people would really envy that. Not me. I love the ocean, but I'm not going to live in a tiny apartment (with no prospects of ever owning a home) just so I can be several blocks from it.
The only other areas I might consider is New England or (northern) Virginia. Still, it's nice to only be 150 miles from where I grew up. It's an easy weekend trip that way....but not so close that the in-laws can just pop in!

Kids in Restaurants

So, I won't detail everything we did this weekend. Some of it is actually kind of boring (I'm trying to get some studying in for my HR exam, so it's not all fun and games). But I have to mention a dining experience DH and I had this weekend.

We went to a steak restaurant yesterday on an off-hour to avoid the crowds. They seat us next to a large table with a few kids that (we thought) were about ready to leave (otherwise, we would have asked to be moved). However, as DH and I were ordering, we realized that the table hadn't even been served their entrees yet. The mess that was on the table was for appetizers, drinks and tons of kids crap.

Anyhow, during the entire course of our meal, the kids were up, down, running around, screaming, and crying. The mother, father, grandmother, and some of the other adults did whatever they could to placate the bawling brats. Finally (to our great relief), the father picked up two of the misbehaving kids and took them to the entrance area (it was raining, so they couldn't go outside). We could still hear them squawking, but at least it wasn't right next to us. What we noticed is that the father's plate had steak and lobster on it, that was growing cold. When he finally came back, all of the other people were finished eating. He asked for his food to be re-warmed, but just as the plate was being taken away, the kids started back up again. You would have thought the mother might have stepped in and taken her turn, but she was too busy arguing with her MIL.

When the steak/lobster was brought back, they boxed it up to take it to go. I hope the dad got to eat some of those appetizers because he literally didn't have a bite of his entree. The last thing we heard the mother say (as we were leaving the restaurant) was, "they're just fussy because they are tired!" The MIL then said, "but you never even get to enjoy your meal!" No shit! And what about all of the other people whose meals were ruined because you insisted on taking them out!

Seriously, folks....get a babysitter and leave them at home. Even if I wasn't CF, I would be pretty pissed off to pay for a meal at a restaurant when it was being ruined by kids. I'm sure that there were many parents there who had hired a babysitter so that they could enjoy themselves in peace, only to have the meal ruined by other people's kids.

Mini Binge

I'm not a binger. I do emotionally eat sometimes, but I don't binge. At least I don't think I do. I guess I consider binging to be stuffing yourself until you feel sick. I think I did that sometimes in my teens and early twenties, but I really don't do that anymore. The good thing is, I don't think I've done much emotional eating either since I started journaling. Today, however, was different.

I went to work expecting a stress-free day. All of the partners were at a meeting in Florida, and my assistant was out (she's a good kid, but she's needy and I'm glad when I can get a break from her chattering). I had a long meeting scheduled with one of our consultants, but it was just a planning meeting. I figured I'd be able to get everything done and out the door by 3:00 p.m.

Boy, was I wrong. It was just one thing after another today. I had three major (and completely separate) personnel issues by 10:00 a.m. Two of them were emotionally charged and very draining. A proposal that came in and had to go out the same day (and my assistant is out). An article that needed to go out. A slew of phone calls to return. Then, I talked with my mom and she said my dad isn't doing too great (no emergencies, but just enough to keep me worried). All of this was going on while our consultant (who obviously is paid by the hour) sits and waits for me to meet with her.

Anyhow, I did end up leaving around 3:30, but I was spent. DH and I went out to dinner, and then came home. I decided to do something I find completely therapeutic: bake chocolate chip cookies!!! And although most people wouldn't call this a binge, it was pretty close for me. I ate several "pinches" of cookie dough and three baked chocolate chip cookies (and two small glasses of 2% milk). Just enough to make me feel very full.

I'm not regretting it. In fact, I would do it over again. But whenever I wonder why I only lost a pound in a whole month, I'll have to remember nights like tonight!

April 2008 results

Well, there have been some visible changes, but not much in the way of pounds lost. I did weigh myself on April 25th, and I was 1.5 pounds down from the beginning of the month. I weighed myself today (May 1st), and I gained .5 back. So basically, I lost a total of one pound for the month of April. Oh well. At least the scale is going in the right direction, albeit slowly.
